I started this comparison by looking exclusively for alternative rental services to U-Haul, only because previous experience has shown that U-Haul is so expensive. So I searched the following trucks:
1) Budget: $1300.
2) Penske: $1600.
3) Ryder: $1000.
4) Enterprise: No return system.
5) ABF or U-Pack: $1500.
One commentor said that Budget trucks are
cheaper than U-Haul. I'l have to check and get back to you.

For a 12-foot truck that
holds approximately 1-2 rooms full of furniture, the price is $1300.
Ouch! And the price only goes up from there.
Wow!! Penske is $1600 for the same 12-foot, one-way truck.
These folks are making a killing!!
Ryder Trucks. What
about Ryder Trucks? They charge .49 per mile,
plus $100 per day. Let's say on 4 days of renting (2 days for travel and
2 days for loading and unloading), I would be looking at $900, which is much
better than the other two prices. So far, that's the price to beat. I learned this afternoon, Tuesday December 22, that Ryder does not do one-way leases. That was disappointing. Later in the day U,-Haul quoted me $1580 for one way.
Enterprise DOES NOT have a one-way ridership
program; no network, so the trucks have to be returned to the location where I
picked it from. That's too bad because their prices were better than
Budget and Penske. Cannot believe how expensive Penske trucks are.
Enterprise does not have a 12-foot truck, but they do have a 16-foot box
truck. The clerk would not present me with a price once I told her that I
wanted the truck for a one-way trip. What about providing a service for
Enterprise and others who do not have a program in place? Hmm.
Wonder how much I can charge them to receive and park their vehichels.

ABF Truck rentals is another alternative to
U-Haul. The company is called U-Pack. It is essentially a POD
service where you load and unload your own stuff. They charge $1500.
