DRIVE CARS BETWEEN DEALERS

This reminds me of another source of income if you have the time, driving record and inclination to drive new cars on dealer trades.

I spoke with Calvin Lau, one of two sales managers, and he suggested that I speak with General Mgr., John Hall, before he explained to me that BMW McKenna has their own trucks that they use to ship vehicles to and between dealers.  Good to know.  Calvin had a good, professional tone.  Here is a list of the guys and gals at McKenna.

If you approach the new car dealership Sales Manager with an offer to drive and s/he is interested, expect a background check including credit score and driving record. The pay is based either on miles driven @50¢+/- per mile or hours driven @$10-$20+/- per hour plus food and lodging if an overnight is involved.

You'll be taking a new car somewhere usually within a 250 radius of your home and returning with another new car.

They usually hire retirement age drivers with time to spare and of course clean driving records. The downside is that it sometimes involves late nights and hours of time so most take books on tape or some form of entertainment except texting.

The best opportunity is with a chain dealer group with multiple franchises. Be absolutely certain to get a contract and copy of their insurance policy before setting out. It's not unheard of for some dealers to change the pay agreement post delivery with no contract. Insurance is also important for obvious reasons.

An awkward aside is a story told to me by a Toyota dealer consulting client who sent two drivers in new cars to swap with another dealer. The drivers, a husband and wife team, crashed into EACH OTHER on the way. No injuries, and it's become legendary in dealer circles. No word on whether they're still married.

. . . .

DHI Transport hauls cars across the country and have been in the business for enough years to know what they're doing. They're based in Florida, but drive to the West Coast and back. Very dependable. I can vouch for them. 813-777-8669. Ask for Dan.
