WINDOW-CLEANING TOOLS & SOLUTIONS

Experienced window washer.  Own tools and equipment. Experienced with construction clean-up and post-construction of windows. Removing glue over spray stucco, paint, stickers, and wiping down the metal frames.

CLEANING SOLUTIONS
Ammonia as a window cleaner.  She says it leaves no streaks.  And she adds "any old" soap.  Claims it's cheap to make.  Ah, yeah.  Last she adds rubbing alcohol! Never heard of that as a window cleaner.  All of this is new to me.  What do you think?  WINDOW CLEANING W/ AMMONIA & VINEGAR
I'd have thought that vinegar was the best.

WHICH CLEANSER WORKS FOR WHICH SPOTS?
Ammonia removes grease stains or fingerprints from glass.  White vinegar removes water spots, such as from rain or previous cleaning, from the glass.
Don't combine ammonia and vinegar in the cleaning solution. Ammonia is an alkali and vinegar is an acid, so the two cancel each other out and become neutral, losing all cleaning power.
HOW TO GET WINDOWS STREAK-FREE?
The suggestion was made to rubbing alcohol to leave the windows streak-free. Never heard of that either.  Another writer suggested microfiber cloths (from the auto department at Walmart) with Invisible Glass to get the windows streak-free. The Invisible Glass does have alcohol in it and I agree to only use those rags for windows and do not use fabric softener and air dry them.
One important note is to never clean a window that has direct sunlight on it as it will definitely streak. Time it that they are cool, and in the shade.
For windows anyway, it sounds like ammonia is the powerhouse cleaner. Windex's active ingredient is ammonia.  It will remove most stains that appear on glass. What role then does vinegar play? Only superficial, frequent cleanings should you use vinegar.  I don't know.
For drying a window, always choose micro-fiber cotton cloths.
AMMONIA & VINEGAR
2 parts warm water; 1 part ammonia; 1 part vinegar.  That's one recipe.
Another recipe calls for 1/3 ammonia and 2/3 water.  I guess it would depend on the glass stain.
One observer noted that certain windows, like Pella Windows, have ratings. Ratings for what I do not know.  She recalled reading a warning "Do Not Use Window Cleaners with Ammonia" as it can harm the Low E rating on that particular window.  She finished by recommending that she always uses vinegar and water and a squeegee.

FENESTRATION ENERGY RATINGS

Did not know this.  Some windows are manufactured and sold based on their energy rating, a system established by the Feds.  There are some discrepancies as to which part of the window responsible for its energy rating. Those discrepancies are covered here.  Seems like the main window manufacturer that these upscale, residential windows and their ratings cover are EnergyStar Windows.

You can see the different energies that are rated.  My question is, "Will the same window cleaning products on standardized windows work on these specially designed windows?"

LIFE AS A LOCKSMITH

Planning and specialized training can prepare you for the locksmith trade. Take these steps to learn how to become a locksmith:

Earn a high school diploma or GED. Basic education provides a foundation for success in the workforce and the necessary qualification for many locksmith training programs and entry-level employment. You can prepare for your career as a locksmith by emphasizing classes in applied trades such as workshop, business, customer service and communication.

Complete a locksmith training program. You can find locksmithing courses at vocational and trade schools, community college and through the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). The ALOA even offers financial aid for qualified applicants. Military servicepeople have access to military locksmith training programs.

Work as an apprentice to a professional locksmith. Hands-on experience can help you apply your classroom training and gain a foothold in the job market.

Pass a certification exam. Many states require certification to work as a locksmith. Whether or not your region requires it, certification is an important step toward establishing your credibility and expertise as a professional locksmith. The ALOA and the Safe and Vault Technicians Association (SAVTA) offer various grades of certification for locksmiths. The basic exam qualifies you as a Registered Locksmith (RL).

As locking devices become more complex (mechanically and even electronically), the education requirements for locksmiths will increase. The ALOA offers over 100 courses in locksmithing, covering every aspect of the lock and safe trade. Courses cover advanced locking technologies such as automotive keys and electronic locks, transponders, keyless mechanical locks, high-security cylinder locks, automated door closers, exit devices and exit alarms, electronic access controls and more. Basic locksmith training, meanwhile, covers topics such as common lock hardware, combination lock operation and changing methods, key machine servicing, re-keying lock cylinders, troubleshooting lock malfunctions, designing and keying a master key system.

Locksmith training is designed to accommodate working professionals. Certification training programs may be completed in as little as a few weeks and are available online or on night and weekend schedules.

If you approach the new car dealership Sales Manager with an offer to drive and s/he is interested, expect a background check including credit score and driving record. The pay is based either on miles driven @50¢+/- per mile or hours driven @$10-$20+/- per hour plus food and lodging if an overnight is involved.

You'll be taking a new car somewhere usually within a 250 radius of your home and returning with another new car.

They usually hire retirement age drivers with time to spare and of course clean driving records. The downside is that it sometimes involves late nights and hours of time so most take books on tape or some form of entertainment except texting.

The best opportunity is with a chain dealer group with multiple franchises. Be absolutely certain to get a contract and copy of their insurance policy before setting out. It's not unheard of for some dealers to change the pay agreement post delivery with no contract. Insurance is also important for obvious reasons.

An awkward aside is a story told to me by a Toyota dealer consulting client who sent two drivers in new cars to swap with another dealer. The drivers, a husband and wife team, crashed into EACH OTHER on the way. No injuries, and it's become legendary in dealer circles. No word on whether they're still married.

. . . .

DHI Transport hauls cars across the country and have been in the business for enough years to know what they're doing. They're based in Florida, but drive to the West Coast and back. Very dependable. I can vouch for them. 813-777-8669. Ask for Dan.

COST OF A CLASS B LICENSE
Okay, spoke with Erika at Dootson Driving School in Monrovia.  She explained that to earn a Class B driving license I will need to pass a written test and a driving test.  I can study the materials at home, but I will need to be trained by their drivers in their lot.  She said that Dootson offers a Pay Per Day program where you pay $48 for 30 minutes or $96 for 1 hour.  Sounds steep for talking while sitting in the cab of a truck.

She mentioned that the average cost of the course for a Class B License is $700 and it takes about 3 weeks to complete.  A Class B with a P authorization allows me to drive vehicles that transport large numbers of people.  And the study materials cost $20, a price that also includes enrollment.  That last part doesn't sound right, for it makes the cost sound too low.  Enrollment may be a lot more, but the materials themselves cost only $20.  I'll check back with her.
